R. K. Laxman began his career as a part-time cartoonist, usually for local newspapers and periodicals. His first full-time employment was as a political cartoonist for The Free Press Journal in Mumbai. Later, he joined The Times of India and became well-known for portraying The Common Man, which proved to be a watershed moment in Laxman's life.
