Sylvie WEENS * Mustapha Agha Ayad (d. 1887) (1) was one of the most influential notables living in Luxor during the second half of the 19 th century. A rich landowner (2) , he also held over the years the duties of consular-agent for various nations. He is famous for his involvement in the discovery of the famous cache of royal mummies at Deir el-Bahari in 1871 and the subsequent illegal selling of some of its contents (3) .
His house occupied a prime location inside Luxor temple for more than thirty-five years and is well documented in contemporary travellers' accounts as well as in numerous photographs that cover the various phases of occupation of the monument, and its clearance by the Service des Antiquités (4) . Many of these photographs were taken by the Italian born photographer Antonio Beato (1825-1903) whose studio was located just a few meters away from the temple (5) .
