Jacques Joseph Henri Charrierwas born into a family of military men in Metz, France, in 1936. Growing up with six siblings, he was supposed to pursue a military career like his father.

Jacques broke with the family tradition to become an artist. At the age of 17, he entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Strasbourg where he tried ceramics.

In 1956, a teacher at the Conservatoire de Montpellier offered him a role in a local film, L'Arlésiennebased on a novel by Alphonse Daudet. This success stimulated him to try his luck in Paris.

As a 20-year old he entered the ENSATT (École Nationale Supérieure des Arts et Techniques du Théâtre), where he studied with the actress Berthe Bovy.
