Edinburgh’s Royal Lyceum Theatre is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its company in style. First came the exciting announcement that leading dramatist David Greig is to be its next artistic director, and now this superb production of Waiting For Godot.
Greig will inherit a company which has, since 2003, charted a strong and steady course, and enjoyed a remarkable late flourish, under out-going artistic director Mark Thomson. It is worth noting that, arguably, the two finest productions of Thomson’s tenure have been Pirandello’s Six Characters In Search Of An Author (2008) and Brecht’s The Caucasian Chalk Circle (earlier this year). I'm not even a massive fan of Cindy or Michelle Collins but couldn't see the argument that she was at all like Cindy. She could't walk from A to B without it being robotic and unnatural, she flatly just recited her lines back at the camera like she was literally reading the script off the page for the first time.*Betty* wrote: ↑Sep 02, 2023
I never understood the dislike for Hetti’s Lucy. She was perfectly fine in the role and did do some good work. But mostly the writing let her down, they brought her in and thought her name would be enough and put her in endless teen drama with Lauren, Whit and Joey.
She started to take off when Ian had his breakdown and she had to step up for Bobby and the businesses. Her final few weeks with Danny, and setting up the business with Lauren was great. I just wish we had that build up for slightly longer.
Hetti actually gave the character some life and was matching up to the more nuanced direction they clearly wanted Lucy to go in, which was clearly a bitch who was quite vulnerable underneath and used it as a defense mechanism.
She was let down by the ridiculous "teen" stories w
